- The Ilmenau Goethe-House undergoes renovation processes
Goethe once scribbled his famous verse on the wall of his humble house in Ilmenau, which is now known as the Goethe cottage. Lately, this historical site has undergone a remodeling process. The city of Thuringia mentioned that the walls have been refreshed with new cladding, the timber frame was fixed, and the damaged window shutters were secured. Additionally, broken floorboards were replaced. The total expense for this makeover was around 86,000 euros.
Back in the day, this cottage on Kickelhahn - Ilmenau's local mountain - garnered recognition when Goethe penned his hit "Wandrers Nachtlied" on its walls using a pencil on September 6, 1780. Unfortunately, a fire destroyed the cottage in 1870, but it was then rebuilt following its original design.
The renovations were completed just in time for Goethe's 275th birthday celebration that will take place on August 28th.
The renovation project included the installation of new cladding on the exterior, which will help protect the cottage from the elements, ensuring it remains preserved for future generations. Visitors interested in the literary history of the site can now explore the newly restored 'Other' rooms within the Goethe cottage.
