Chronicles of the Past The Past Explored in Depth Exploring the Deeps of History Delving into the Annals of Time Discovering the Tales of Old Uncovering the Hidden Treasures from the Past - The Heidengraben Center boasts Celtic influences in its design.
The Oppidum Heidengraben on the Swabian Alb, a significant late Celtic fortified settlement, spans about 17 square kilometers and is one of Europe's largest. To honor the considerable influence exerted by the Celts in Southwest Germany before Christ's birth, officials recently established an information center. This center lies in the regions of Grabenstetten, Erkenbrechtsweiler, and Hülben.
At the opening, Minister President Kretschmann (Greens) addressed the audience, stating, "Southwest Germany owes its cultural form to the Celts in the first millennium BCE," as per an advance statement.
Having received support under Baden-Württemberg's Celtic Concept, the Heidengraben Center development process has been undertaken. This interactive and multi-media facility covers approximately 350 square meters, aiming to present the late Celtic era's history. The Ministry for Science, Research, and the Arts dedicated 1.75 million euros to this venture, while the federal government chipped in an additional 2 million euros through their "Investments in National Cultural Institutions in Germany" (INK) program.
In addition to the Heidengraben Center, the 'Celtic Experience Field' consists of a Celtic experience trail and an 18-meter high observation tower near the information center. The state and federal government have invested a total of eight million euros into the Celtic Concept.
Launched in 2019 by the state government, the Celtic Concept is geared towards highlighting these cultural relics. Collaboration among Celtic sites is also essential to establish a collective, state-level marketing strategy and educational initiatives.
Both the Heidengraben Center and 'Celtic Experience Field' have been developed in a partnership between Hülben (District of Reutlingen), Erkenbrechtsweiler (District of Esslingen), Grabenstetten (District of Reutlingen), and Tübingen and Stuttgart government presidencies.
