- The heat is over and storms are coming
The intense heat in Bavaria is, for now, over, but it remains warm like high summer: After the hottest day of the year with a preliminary high of 36.1 degrees Celsius in Kitzingen, temperatures are now dropping, with 26 to 30 degrees Celsius expected on Thursday in the Free State. Towards the weekend, there could even be widespread and persistent rain, reducing the risk of forest fires.
According to forecasts from the German Weather Service (DWD), it will remain stormy, especially in the south of Bavaria, where people should expect heavy rainfall, possibly even severe storms. Visitors to an Adele concert in Munich should prepare for rain and possibly severe storms on Wednesday evening.
On Tuesday evening, firefighters and police had their hands full due to local storms. Particularly affected were Lower Bavaria, the Upper Palatinate, and the west of Munich.
Temporary disruptions in rail traffic
In the upper Bavarian district of Rosenheim, a Eurocity train collided with a tree that had fallen onto the tracks, according to the Federal Police. Around 260 people were on board, but no one was injured, the Federal Police said. Elsewhere, storms also caused disruptions in rail traffic.
Uprooted trees, fallen branches, flooded basements
In Lower Bavaria, according to the police, trees were uprooted, vehicles damaged by falling branches, and basements flooded with water. In Feldkirchen in the district of Straubing-Bogen, the power was out at times. The lantern procession planned in connection with the Straubing Gauboden festival was cancelled by the organizer due to the threat of storms.
In Munich, storms mainly affected the west of the city in the evening. The fire department responded to 35 storm incidents. Heavy rain flooded roads, flooded underpasses, and flooded basements. Elsewhere, there were also floods, for example, in the Middle Franconian Weißenburg.
In the upper Bavarian district of Eichstätt, three people were injured when a driver lost control of their car on the A9 motorway in heavy rain.
The intensity of the rain is expected to increase towards the weekend, reducing the risk of forest fires significantly. Despite the forecast of heavy rain and possible severe storms, the Adele concert in Munich is still scheduled for Wednesday evening.
