- The heat is followed by thunderstorms - temperatures up to 35 degrees
It's getting hot in Bavaria: The German Weather Service (DWD) expects temperatures between 30 and 35 degrees today - and that's with plenty of sunshine. However, meteorologists are also warning of severe thunderstorms up to extreme weather. "Later in the afternoon and evening, there will be some heavy thunderstorms that could merge into a large cluster," the DWD said in an advance warning for the Upper Bavaria and Swabia districts.
There, heavy rain of up to 35 liters per square meter is expected, with local amounts even exceeding 50 liters in a short time - this is considered extreme weather. Additionally, large hailstones up to four centimeters in size or heavy gusts of wind up to 100 kilometers per hour cannot be ruled out in some areas. "The thunderstorms will move eastwards and weaken during the night."
Heat warning for Bavaria
But before the thunderclouds rise into the sky, it's swimming weather everywhere in the Free State. An official heat warning is in effect for large parts of the state. "Avoid the heat if possible, drink enough water, and keep indoor spaces cool," advise the experts.
It will cool down in some places due to the expected thunderstorms. In some areas, there will also be showers and thunderstorms at night. According to the DWD forecast, Thursday will bring sunny intervals along with dense thunderclouds and showers and thunderstorms in many places. Additionally, there will be warm temperatures of 25 to 29 degrees with gusty winds.
Risk of forest fires
The heat and dryness are also increasing the risk of burning fields and forests in Bavaria. Currently, both the forest fire danger index (WBI) and the grassland fire index are elevated in many parts of the state. The WBI is at level three (medium danger) in many areas, with some smaller regions at level four (high danger).
The grassland fire index, which represents the fire risk of open terrain with dead wild grass, is widespread at level three, and in some areas at level four of the five-level scale. It can also be applied to ripe grain fields. More than 100 square meters of such a grain field have already burned in Ohrenbach in the Middle Franconian district of Ansbach when a combine harvester caught fire during harvesting. The police believe a technical defect was the cause. The damage is estimated at around 60,000 euros.
