The Governmental Council approves legislation intended to combat heart ailments
"Let's put more emphasis on preserving our heart wellness," suggested Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD), post the cabinet's agreement. "Germany, unfortunately, is grappling with a substantial issue - excess heart fatalities. It's high time we all consider modifying our habits, engage in more physical activity, and make more mindful food choices for this reason."
As equally significant, according to Lauterbach, is identifying and combating inherent risk factors sooner. The "Healthy Heart Act" is the key to achieving this goal. "With this legislation, we can considerably enhance lifespan and quality of life in Germany," emphasized the minister.
Cardiovascular diseases have been the primary reason for mortality in Germany, accounting for approximately one-third of all fatalities. According to the Federal Statistical Office, around 348,000 individuals lost their lives to such diseases in 2023. Lauterbach's ministry points to research indicating that up to 70% of these diseases can be attributed to unhealthy lifestyle choices - poor nutrition, inadequate exercise, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption.
In 2020, cardiovascular diseases alone accounted for the highest expenses within the German healthcare system, reaching nearly 57 billion euros.
