- The German military aids in the post-flood recovery efforts in Bruchsal
The German Military is aiding in the post-flood cleanup in Bruchsal, a district of Karlsruhe. Around 70 soldiers accompanied by trucks are assisting in the removal of mud and large debris, as stated by a city representative. Joining forces are workers from the local construction yard and numerous volunteers. The cleanup process continues to progress, the city reported.
The sudden influx of heavy rain triggered the Saalbach to unexpectedly surge and spill its banks during the wee hours of Wednesday. According to the Baden-Württemberg Flood Intelligence Center, the water level at the Bruchsal gauge reached an unprecedented 2.13 meters at its zenith, surpassing the 100-year flood limit of 2.10 meters. Various residential areas found themselves submerged, with streets and basements drenched.
As of Friday evening, all streets have regained electricity supply, as reported by the city representative. Nevertheless, several homes face complications with their electrical systems or damp basements, making them unsafe for a stable power connection. In such instances, neighbors have started providing mutual aid. When multiple houses are impacted sequentially, makeshift power stations have been established, supply power through extension cords. Additionally, two emergency assembly spots are fully occupied.
The excessive flooding in Bruchsal caused extensive damage to many homes, leaving some with electrical issues and damp basements. Due to the flooding, several areas remained without electricity until Friday evening.
Despite the city-wide cleanup efforts, some areas affected by the flooding are still at risk, as several homes require specialized assistance to restore their electrical systems and dry out their damp basements.
