- The German Football Association (DFB) has announced that it will not be able to make any decisions on the future of the club.

Four weeks after the unfortunate Euro exit against Spain and plenty of time for reflection during his vacation, Germany's record goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is keeping all his options open regarding his future with the national football team. Retiring, continuing, or even taking a break from the DFB team - everything seems possible for the 38-year-old captain of FC Bayern Munich.

"At this point, I haven't made a decision yet. It's not the right time to announce anything or say what's next. There are still some conversations to be had," Neuer said during FC Bayern's trip to Seoul.

No talk with Nagelsmann yet

Only after those conversations can there be clarity. "Then I need to be clear about what I really want," Neuer said. Even the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico at the age of 40 could still be a goal for the long-standing German number one. Neuer has been in goal for the DFB in all four World Cups and all Euros since 2010.

In Seoul, Neuer hinted that the next Nations League matches against Hungary and the Netherlands in early September are also not yet decided. "Toni Kroos took a longer break - and then he came back for the tournament," Neuer said. Ultimately, though, the coach makes the squad decisions. Neuer hasn't had a conversation with new national team coach Julian Nagelsmann since the Euro exit.

World Cup teammates Kroos and Müller have retired

Neuer's World Cup teammate Kroos (34) retired after the Euro and returned to the national team for this summer's home Euro at Nagelsmann's request. Kroos has since ended his career, as has Bayern teammate Thomas Müller (34).

"During his time in Seoul with FC Bayern, Neuer expressed that his participation in the upcoming Nations League matches against Hungary and the Netherlands is not yet finalized."

"Despite his Euro exit with Germany, Neuer, like his former teammate Kroos, has not ruled out the possibility of participating in the 2026 World Cup with the national team, even at the age of 40."
