- The Free Democratic Party (FDP) expresses regret over their election advertisements placed at memorial sites.
FDP's Adverts Near Euthanasia Victims' Memorial in Brandenburg Spark Controversy
The FDP's promotional materials situated close to the memorial honoring the casualties of the Euthanasia killings in Brandenburg an der Havel have ignited a storm of disapproval in the area. According to the memorial, any form of advertising in its immediate surroundings is considered inappropriate. They had reached out to the FDP, requesting the removal of the promotional materials. Previously, the "B.Z." had covered this topic.
Advert Apology
The FDP acknowledged the presence of two promotional materials. The regional chapter expressed their bafflement as to why these promotional materials were placed near the "Zum Nicolaiplatz" bus stop, specifically in front of the memorial. They had quickly requested the removal of the two promotional materials, which was accomplished by Monday.
"Our regional office has reached out to the memorial multiple times since the incident to offer our apologies for the mistake," they said. "We would like to extend our heartfelt apologies to the relatives of the victims on behalf of the local chapter. Such incidents should not occur, and we will make sure to sensitize our local chapters to exercise more caution when it comes to promotional material placement to avoid such errors in the future."
Nazis Killed Over 9,000 Sick and Disabled Individuals
The Brandenburg Memorials Foundation established the memorial for the victims of the Euthanasia killings in Brandenburg an der Havel in 2012, within the former economic building of the Old Prison. At this significant historical site, adjacent to the former site of the gas chamber, a permanent exhibition educates visitors about the planning and execution of the murders of over 9,000 sick and disabled individuals in Nazi Germany between January and October 1940.
The controversy surrounding the FDP's advertisements near the Euthanasia victims' memorial in Brandenburg an der Havel led to a request for their removal, as per the memorial's policy against advertising in its immediate surroundings. After realizing the error, the FDP issued an apology and ordered the removal of the promotional materials, expressing their regret and vowing to exercise more caution in the future.
Given the sensitive history of the site, an Election to the Landtag held in the region should consider the moral and ethical implications of campaign activities near the memorial, ensuring respect for the memory of the thousands of victims who lost their lives during the Euthanasia program.
