Urgency Situations - The flooding situation in southern and eastern Bavaria remains critical.
The critical flooding situation in Bavaria persists, with cleanup efforts underway in some regions but water levels rising in others. 17 communities have declared emergencies due to the flooding. In the heart of Regensburg, evacuation measures had to be taken overnight as the situation became precarious, and it was also tense in Rosenheim. Heavier rains were expected to return during the night, but the German Meteorological Service (DWD) predicts the rain will subside on Tuesday.
The peaks at various gauges along the Danube, including Regensburg, Straubing, Deggendorf, and Passau, are expected to increase during the night or on Tuesday. However, the flood at the southern tributaries of the Danube is expected to recede.
In Regensburg, around 200 people had to leave their homes due to the flood risk in the evening - these homes are located directly on the Danube, with the ground underneath the street severely swollen due to high groundwater levels. There's a risk that "the flood protection elements will no longer hold, fail suddenly, and the street will be flooded."
Flood protection measures are still ongoing in Straubing and the district of Deggendorf - for instance, in the communities of Niederalteich and Metten.
The historic old town of Passau is largely sealed off for traffic now, with only residents and pedestrians allowed in. The city of Passau has been hit by floods repeatedly, as it's where the three rivers Donau, Inn, and Ilz meet.
The authorities warned against interfering with emergency services, asking the public to avoid closed areas and dams, and follow the instructions of the emergency services.
DWD: A hint of sun on Tuesday
The DWD forecasts a slight respite on Tuesday: After heavy rain and thunder south of the Danube and in the Bavarian Forest overnight, the sun is expected to make an appearance during the day. The clouds may clear in the Alps and Bavarian Forest, although it'll be cloudy and rainy at the start. Temperatures in Bavaria are predicted to range from 19 to 25 degrees.
At least two people have been killed in Upper Bavaria due to the floods in the past few days - a 43-year-old woman perished in the cellar of a house in Schrobenhausen, and a firefighter died in the line of duty in Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm. Another firefighter is still missing in Swabian Offingen, where he was with other emergency services in a boat that capsized. His colleagues managed to save themselves.
Minister President Markus Soeder (CSU) said during a visit to Upper Bavaria's Reichertshofen, "The situation is serious, critical, and tense." Joined by Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (both SPD), Soeder added, "We'll do everything we can to help faster, also with the federal government's resources." On Tuesday, the Bavarian cabinet will discuss the flood situation and potential aid for those impacted by the flooding.
