The finely-sliced leverkusen is still missing

The record-holding national player considers the champion well-positioned. He is not a self-starter and Leverkusen must certainly fear one club.

TV expert Lothar Matthäus believes that German football champions Bayer Leverkusen have a lot to look forward to in the upcoming season. "Similar to last year, Bayer 04 has a slight advantage over the competition. However, the new season won't be a walk in the park, as there's the added strain of the Champions League and FC Bayern is eager to forget last season," Matthäus writes in his Sky column.

"The coach and the club management have done an incredible job over the past two years. They've kept Florian Wirtz, signed Alejandro Grimaldo on a free transfer, and secured Victor Boniface for relatively little money," says the German record international. The transfers are complete, the team has stayed together, and that's also thanks to coach Xabi Alonso.

"There's still a lot to do"

"Nevertheless, there's still a lot to do for the Werkself. The national team players were at the Euros and Copa America, the team needs to find its rhythm again, but I don't see that as a problem given the atmosphere around the team," says Matthäus. "That the preparation games didn't go optimally in terms of results might be a good thing. It shows that there's still some fine-tuning needed, and they'll continue to work on that in the coming days."

"Despite the successful transfers and strong team cohesion, Bayer Leverkusen's participation in the German Bundesliga this season will not be without challenges."

"As Lothar Matthäus mentioned, the squad will need to regain its rhythm following the national team players' participation in the Euros and Copa America, and this process should be manageable given the positive energy within the team."
