The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office takes over the investigation after the crime in Mannheim, in which a police officer died.

A recent knife attack in Mannheim has caught the attention of the Federal Prosecutor's Office, leading them to take over the case. They deemed the situation significant enough to involve themselves, suggesting a possible religious motivation behind the crime. The attacker allegedly targeted individuals critical of Islam and wanted to deny them the right to express their opinions freely.

On the preceding Friday, a 25-year-old man attacked several people at an event hosted by the anti-Islam group Pax Europa (BPE) in Mannheim's city center. A police officer was critically wounded and later died in the hospital from stab wounds. Five other individuals, including BPE board member Michael Stürzenberger, were also injured during the assault. The individual suspected of carrying out the attack was fatally shot by another police officer.

The suspect, an Afghan national, had reportedly arrived in Germany in 2013 and resided in Hesse. Investigators quickly visited his home in Heppenheim following the attack, seizing electronic data carriers as part of their investigation. The perpetrator had not been previously known to the authorities.
