- The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has reported "extremely heavy heavy rains" in northern Hesse.
Over 90 liters of rain per square meter were recorded in North Hesse. The Hessian Agency for Nature Conservation, Environmental Protection and Geology (HLNUG) announced this. The region north of Kassel was particularly affected - more than 90 liters were recorded in nine hours at the Hofgeismar-Beberbeck station. The agency described this as "extremely heavy downpour". Locally, more than 150 liters per square meter could have fallen.
In North and East Hesse, high water alert levels were also exceeded. The Hofgeismar/Lempe gauge reached 254 centimeters, indicating an exceptional high water level with flooding of built-up areas.
The heavy rain in North Hesse caused significant flooding, submerging several built-up areas. Despite the gauge in Hofgeismar/Lempe reaching a record-breaking 254 centimeters, the actual rainfall could have exceeded 150 liters per square meter in some local areas.
