Expensive European Football Championship Event - The expense of manufacturing fan miles is approximately 24 million euros.

The cost of setting up the two fan zones for the European Football Championship at the Brandenburg Gate and Reichstag in Berlin is approximately €24 million, as confirmed by the Senate Department for the Interior and Sport to the German Press Agency on Thursday. Earlier, media house "Correctiv" had reported on this.

Berlin is one of the 10 host cities for the EM from June 14 to July 14 with six games taking place at the Olympiastadion. It is expected that tens of thousands of people will attend each game in the fan zones around these iconic landmarks.

The UEFA will provide and fund the technical equipment for the fan zones as well as some parts of the video walls at a cost in the low to mid-million range, according to the Senate Department for the Interior and Sport. "The sponsors will cover the expenses for the branded setups of their partners and sponsors in the low double-digit million range," it stated.

The Senate has set aside a budget of around €84 million. The initial cost estimate had been €43.2 million back then.

Six years back, during the national bidding process in 2017, the potential impacts of the Corona pandemic, as well as energy or inflation-related price increases resulting from the Ukraine war, were not foreseeable, said the spokesperson for the Senate Department for the Interior and Sport, Heiner Spannuth. Sports and Interior Senator Iris Spranger (SPD) mentioned the increase in security measures as one of the factors behind the cost hikes on Thursday.
