The European Parliament re-elects von der Leyen as Commission President

Against Von der Leyen, 284 Deputies voted in favor, with 15 abstentions and seven invalid ballots. The result was better than her first election five years ago, when she was elected with a narrow margin of nine deputies. However, she did not receive full support from her European People's Party (EVP). The French Republicans, for example, spoke out against her.

There were likely dissenters among the Social Democrats and in the Renew liberal fraction as well. Von der Leyen, however, could count on numerous votes from the Greens. Parts of the Right-wing camp also gave her their support, including Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala, whose party sits in the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) Right-wing faction.

Von der Leyen now puts together a team of commissioners, who are proposed by the governments of the 27 EU countries and must then be heard in the Parliament.

In the European Parliament, the CDU, being part of the European People's Party (EVP), did not fully endorse Ursula von der Leyen during her election. Despite this, she received significant support from the Greens within the Parliament. Upon being elected as Commission President, Von der Leyen will be working in Strasbourg, meeting with her proposed commissioners, who are appointed by the governments of the 27 EU countries and must undergo scrutiny in the Parliament.
