Now, more stringent emission standards will apply to cars. Vehicles in the EU must produce fewer substances harmful to the environment and health in the future.

Negotiators from the European Parliament and EU countries have agreed on a new Euro-7 emission standard in Brussels on Monday, as announced by both sides. This means that, for the first time, limits for brake and tire wear will also be introduced.
What new stringent emission standards for cars will now be in effect
EU member states and the European Parliament still need to officially approve the agreement. According to the Parliament, the rules will apply:
- To passenger cars and vans 30 months after they come into force;
- To buses and trucks 48 months after that date.
The new rules are designed to regulate emissions of pollutants from vehicles more strictly than before. These include:
- Passenger cars;
- Vans;
- Trucks.
Such pollutants include, for example, nitrogen oxides. The plan now is to reduce their emissions into the atmosphere.
What's new is that in the future, substances harmful to health, such as fine dust that can be caused by tire wear or braking, will also be regulated. This means that these rules also apply to electric and hydrogen vehicles.
Until now, exhaust emissions have been at the center of European standards. Euro-6 previously regulated the content of:
- Nitrogen oxides (NOx);
- Carbon monoxide (CO);
- Particulate matter;
- Hydrocarbons;
- Methane;
- Ammonia for trucks and buses.
According to research from the European Environment Agency and the Joint Research Centre, road traffic accounted for 39% of harmful NOx emissions in 2018. Currently, there are plans to reduce these figures and achieve satisfactory results.
Against the backdrop of the new standards, all drivers should exercise particular vigilance.
Non-compliance with established rules can lead to serious negative consequences.
