During Thuringia's state election, the frontman of the AfD, Björn Höcke, exercised his right to vote earlier than noon. Contrary to expectation, the controversial right-wing politician kept his stay at the Bornhagen voting station brief and declined to engage with media personnel present, as...

The election is scheduled for Wednesday at midday.

In Thuringia, AfD's Höcke was leading in polls with a 30% approval rating. However, his recentlead seemed to be faltering. He unexpectedly backed out from this week's TV debate among top contenders, citing unspecified health issues. Prior to this, Höcke had received flak for his harsh comments against German firms promoting diversity.

Despite usually lagging behind the CDU candidate in his Eichsfeld constituency, Höcke made a switch to the Greiz area. However, he now confronts the likelihood of losing there as well.

Interestingly, the victory of his AfD comrades may inadvertently contribute to Höcke's downfall. If the AfD secures enough direct mandates, Höcke's first place on the state list might not guarantee him a seat in the parliament.

A significant drop is predicted for Thuringia's Left party, led by Minister President Ramelow, along with their coalition partners SPD and Greens. The continuation of their minority government or a majority for the coalition appears doubtful, with both SPD and particularly the Greens worrying about not qualifying for the state parliament.

"I will fight – and that's for all those who support a liberal decision and a democratic decision," Ramelow stated after casting his vote. He further expressed that the rise of the AfD is not a unique issue in Thuringia, but a broader problem. He showed annoyance, stating, "Only the 'funny' East is always discussed," and adding, "The east-west sentiment isn't in a good state."

Despite the election in Thuringia being a close contest, Höcke's health issues and recent withdrawal from the TV debate could potentially harm his chances. If the AfD secures enough direct mandates, Höcke's position on the state list might not guarantee him a seat in the parliament, posing a challenge for him in the election.
