- The election in Weimar will be held on 1 September

Following the death of SPD direct candidate Thomas Hartung, the election date remains September 1st in his constituency of Weimar II. The state election supervisor announced this after the SPD district association waived the nomination of a new candidate. Formally, the state election in Hartung's constituency was cancelled and the by-election date set for September 1st. In practice, this means that a new state parliament will still be elected on that day throughout the state. However, the ballot papers will be reprinted.

Hartung passed away on Tuesday. The news of his sudden death caused deep sorrow, not only within the SPD. The doctor and education politician was 53 years old.

The SPD chose not to nominate a replacement candidate after the passing of Thomas Hartung, leading to the maintenance of the original election date of September 1st in Weimar II. Despite formally cancelling the election in Hartung's constituency and scheduling a by-election on the same date, the state parliament will still be elected in its entirety on September 1st, with newly printed ballot papers.
