- The Department of the Federal Treasury issues a warning about deceitful activities involving Elster email communications.
The Thuringian revenue office has issued a caution about swindlers aiming to hijack personal data through emails and counterfeit sites mimicking the Elster tax portal. These emails assert that no refund assessment has been executed for the year 2023, and contact via mail is unreachable, as per the Financial Ministry in Erfurt. These messages prompt recipients to fill out a form on a phony Elster site to establish the refund amount.
As per reports, these scammers aim to acquire login credentials, along with bank or credit card details from taxpayers, or inject viruses and trojans onto computers. The revenue office strongly advises against engaging with these fraudulent emails and refraining from clicking on the provided links. Tax information or receipts are never delivered as email attachments. Moreover, personal details are never solicited via email.
The Commission has issued a warning about the dangers of these scams, emphasizing their potential to compromise taxpayers' security. Subsequently, the Commission has advised taxpayers to verify the authenticity of all emails claiming to be from the revenue office before taking any action.
