Decrease in average lifespan in Thuringia

As per calculations by the Statistical Office in Erfurt, young girls born today in Thuringia can anticipate living up to 82.6 years, while boys are projected to make it to 76.8 years. This decrease in life expectancy is estimated based on the mortality data for the period 2021 to 2023, and it amounts to a few weeks for both genders. This decline is attributed to alterations in general mortality rates and a statistical impact, with population statistics adjusted based on the 2022 census.

Lower life expectancy compared to the nation's average

Federal Statistical Office calculations indicate that the average life expectancy for girls born today in Thuringia falls short by 0.40 years when compared to the country's average. For newborn boys, the disparity is more substantial at 1.4 years. However, this disparity has somewhat lessened in recent times.

Life expectancy in Thuringia displays varying patterns across different age groups. Lifespan slightly increases for individuals over 80, with men expected to live an additional 7.6 years, and women an extra 9.2 years. On the other hand, life expectancy for 65-year-old men has slightly diminished, with 16.9 years remaining, while women in this age group can anticipate living 20.7 years more.

Population decline forecasted

Thuringia is projected to experience one of the most significant population declines among German states in the coming decades, as per a report by the Bertelsmann Foundation. Between 2020 and 2040, the state's population is predicted to decrease by approximately 230,000, or 10.9%, to 1.89 million. This decrease will have varying impacts on different regions and cities, with small municipalities housing 20,000 inhabitants or fewer being the most affected. The cities of Erfurt, Jena, and Weimar are, however, anticipated to remain relatively stable. The population of Thuringia saw a growth of 18,000 residents in 2022, primarily driven by immigration. Presently, the state has a population of around 2.1 million.
