- The Court of Justice of the European Union has ruled that the Commission has failed to fulfil its obligations under the Treaty.

Right-wing extremist Sven Liebich has filed an appeal against a verdict from the Halle Regional Court. A spokesperson for the court confirmed this to Deutsche Presse-Agentur upon request. Liebich was sentenced on August 2nd, among other charges, to one year and six months imprisonment for incitement of the masses and slander, without probation.

The Regional Court had confirmed a verdict from the local court in the city of Halle. Both the prosecution and defense had filed an appeal against the July 2023 verdict, leading to the trial at the Regional Court.

Liebich's sentence is therefore not yet final. The Higher Regional Court in Naumburg must now deal with the case. However, the verdict will only be reviewed for legal errors, and no new evidence will be considered.

Since 2014, Liebich has regularly organized demonstrations, often on the market square in Halle, Saxony-Anhalt. These have often led to confrontations with counter-protesters. Courts have dealt with allegations against Liebich on several occasions. Until a verdict becomes final, the presumption of innocence applies.

The appeal against Liebich's verdict was filed to the same Regional Court that initially handed down the sentence. In the upcoming hearing at the Higher Regional Court in Naumburg, the legal validity of the Regional Court's decision will be reviewed.
