The Hessian state government intends to maintain the funding level for the expansion of bicycle paths on state roads. This will happen despite increasingly challenging budgetary conditions, as explained by the Ministry of Transport in response to a parliamentary inquiry by the Greens. No cuts are planned in the area of bicycle traffic investments in the supplementary budget for the current year.

According to plans, around 17 million euros will be available for the expansion of the Hessian bicycle path network on state roads in 2025, as in 2024. In the long term, the state government aims to increase the funds available.

235 projects planned

Criticism has long existed regarding the slow progress of the expansion of bicycle paths on state roads in Hesse. Currently, 235 projects are reportedly in planning throughout the state. The financing of these projects is not at risk, emphasized State Secretary Umut Sönmez (SPD). The state will continue to expand the bicycle infrastructure on its own and also support municipalities in expanding the infrastructure for bicycle traffic.

The Ministry of Transport mentioned no cuts in the area of investment for bicycle traffic, indicating a commitment to continued support for bicycle path expansion. In an effort to enhance the cycling infrastructure further, the state government aims to increase the funds available for bicycle path network expansion in future years.
