CDU's Alexander Dierks Selected as Potential Next Landtag President by Party Faction

Dierks has been chosen by his party's group as the potential future Landtag President, according to an announcement. He garnered 76% of the votes, the announcement stated. Historically, the largest group in parliament, in this case, the Christian Democrats, holds the right to propose a candidate for the Landtag President post.

Faction head Christian Hartmann praised Dierks, calling him "well-suited for this significant role." Despite his young age, Dierks is a seasoned parliamentarian who has consistently bridged various standpoints. "Alexander Dierks stands for enhancing social unity and has the ability to accomplish this task impartially," Hartmann added.

Trusted Aide to Kretschmer

Originating from Baden-Württemberg, Dierks completed his high school education in Dresden and acquired a Master of Arts in "Politics in Europe" from Chemnitz. Since 2017, the 36-year-old has served as the General Secretary for the CDU state association. Dierks is known as a trusted advisor to Minister President Michael Kretschmer. In the Landtag, he has built a reputation as an expert in social and health policy.

The previous Landtag President, Matthias Rößler (69), opted not to seek re-election in the recent state election. The election of the President will occur at the inaugural session of the new Landtag, with the latest possible date being October 1. A simple majority vote from the 120 MPs is required for the election.

In the state election held last Sunday, the Saxon Union emerged as the winner with 31.9% of the votes, marginally exceeding the AfD's 30.6%.

Dierks' role as a trusted aide to Minister President Michael Kretschmer and his expertise in social and health policy within the Landtag will undoubtedly be beneficial during the party's upcoming efforts to enhance social unity, as suggested by Faction head Christian Hartmann. With Dierks' potential nomination as the next Landtag President, the CDU aims to maintain its influence in promoting unity and effective governance within the parliament.
