- The Commission has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionising radiation.
Manuela Schwesig (SPD), Minister President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, will meet with her Saxon counterpart, Michael Kretschmer (CDU), in Schwerin on Thursday at 9:00 AM. They will kick off the event with a meeting at the castle with activists from the Schwerin World Heritage bid. Both Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's bid for the Residenzensemble and Saxony's bid for the Brüdergemeine Herrnhut were successful last week.
After a brief celebration at the castle, Schwesig and Kretschmer will travel to Rostock, where they plan to sign agreements for closer cooperation in tourism and the establishment of a joint research institute. Before his trip north, Kretschmer highlighted the love of his fellow Saxons for vacationing on the Baltic Sea. According to surveys, Saxony is the most important source market for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's tourism industry, with approximately 1.47 million guests in 2023.
Scientific and research contacts will also be strengthened. Experts from the University of Rostock and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf are planning to establish a joint institute dedicated to fundamental research in the field of laser-driven nuclear fusion and plasma production.
During their meeting in Schwerin, Manuela Schwesig from the SPD mentioned the importance of fostering relationships between Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Saxony, particularly in the context of their successful World Heritage bids by the SPD-led government. Later, at the University of Rostock, representatives from the SPD-aligned institutions will collaborate with their counterparts from Saxony to establish a joint research institute.
