The famed American choreographer John Neumeier (85) and the esteemed Germanist Heinrich Detering (64) have been officially honored with membership in the prestigious German Order Pour le mérite. This coveted award is considered the highest honor given to a scientist or artist in Germany. The organization can include up to 40 distinguished individuals from both within and outside the country. With the inclusion of these two new members, the count has now reached 39 in each category.

During a dinner for the members of the Order, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier expressed his sentiments towards the scholars and artists in a written speech on Sunday. He acknowledged how the sciences and arts display mankind's complex relationship with nature and provide revolutionary concepts and resolutions for a more sustainable and environmentally conscious way of life. "You are the ones who provoke thought, spark change – and stand as a bulwark against human animosity, inequity, and violence. You are the ones who bridge the gap between individuals, both domestically and globally."

The Order functions under the patronage of Federal President Steinmeier and is supported by Culture State Minister Claudia Roth (Greens). Apart from Neumeier and Detering, the co-founders of Biontech, Özlem Türeci (57) and Uğur Şahin (58), were also chosen as new members in a gathering held last year. These research pioneers made a significant impact in the development of the first-ever approved vaccine against Covid-19, contributing immensely to our collective wellbeing. Sadly, both Türeci and Şahin were unable to attend the official ceremony on Sunday due to schedule conflicts.
