Voting processes - The Chief Electoral Officer reports that preparations for the elections were successfully carried out.
Christa Dieckmann, the state election manager in Saxony-Anhalt, is content with the preparations for the upcoming European and municipal elections. All in all, she says the process has gone pretty smoothly. However, there's a hiccup: the representation elections in the Verbandsgemeinde Vorharz and its associated communities have been called off because of irreparable mistakes in the voting setup.
The main issue was that no decision was made on the number of electoral districts, making it impossible to organize a legally-sound presentation of candidates before the legal deadline. The decision was made to move these elections to September 15, 2024.
The rest of the elections will still take place on June 9. This includes the selection of district councils, city councils, and community councils in Saxony-Anhalt, as well as the mayors of all these areas. There are a total of 11 district councils, 3 city councils, and 101 unitary communities with community council elections. In about 970 local communities, both local council and mayor elections will occur. The exact voting format is determined by the municipal statute—whether it's for advisory council seats or mayors.
On top of all this, there will be district council, municipal council, and association council elections taking place in the associations of communities. In total, around 720 seats in the district and city councils in the free cities, 4400 seats in the community and association councils, and 6000 seats in the local councils will need to be filled. Don't forget, there's also a European election on June 9.
Dieckmann doesn't have a comprehensive list of the errors that occurred during the election preparations at the state level. If necessary, conversations with the relevant election authorities will be held to sort out specific issues.
