The CDU secures victory in Rhineland-Palatinate regional elections, leaving the SPD behind.
The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) increased its vote share by 0.4% compared to the 2019 election, while the Social Democratic Party (SPD) declined by 2.4%. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) secured third place with 14.0% and an increase of 5.7%. The Greens were the fourth largest party with 11.0%, which represented a loss of 5.1%.
The Free Democratic Party managed to earn 4.5% of the votes, 1.6% less than their 2019 results. The Free Voters also saw a jump in their vote share, up by 3.5 points to 3.9%. The Left Party's performance dropped significantly, falling almost in half to around 1.8% or 1.7%. The newly created alliance Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) picked up 1.2%.
In addition to elections for district and city councils, municipal and local councils were up for grabs. Some districts and mayoral positions required a second round of voting. This will occur on June 23rd. There were no mayoral elections held in Mainz, Koblenz, or Kaiserslautern.
Sunday also marked municipal elections in regions such as Baden-Württemberg, Brandenburg, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the Saarland, Saxony, and Saxony-Anhalt. In Thuringia, some residents participated in runoff elections.
