The leader of Brandenburg's CDU, Jan Redmann, has been slapped with a fine of 8,000 euros due to his reckless scooter ride under the influence.

The Potsdam court, as reported by their spokesperson, has dished out penalties totaling 25 times 320 euros each, amounting to 8,000 euros. This penalty is a consequence of his irresponsible drunk driving incident. Additionally, his driving privileges will be suspended for another 6 months.

Brandenburg's CDU confirmed that Redmann has agreed to pay the fine. He is also the CDU's leader in the Brandenburg state parliament and their chosen candidate for the state elections on September 22.

Redmann was apprehended by the police while navigating an E-Scooter towards his Potsdam residence in July. Following the incident, he admitted to having a blood alcohol level of approximately 1.3 promille. In Germany, any reading of 1.1 promille or higher is considered a criminal offense. Redmann publicly acknowledged his error.

Redmann is aiming for the Minister-President position

The daily fines are determined by the offender's personal and financial situation. A penalty order is a preliminary verdict, preventing the need for a lengthier main trial.

Redmann is striving to replace Dietmar Woidke (SPD) as the Minister-President. According to an Insa-Consulere poll for the "Nordkurier" in early August, the CDU stood at 19%, trailing behind the AfD with 24% and the SPD with 20%. When asked if Redmann should continue as the CDU's top candidate and potential future Minister-President, 22% responded with "probably yes", while 48% answered "probably no".

The fine of 8,000 euros that Redmann was given by the Potsdam court for his drunk driving incident on an E-Scooter also applies to the daily fines issued as part of the penalty order. Despite facing criticism, Redmann, the CDU leader in Brandenburg and their chosen candidate for the state elections, is still aiming for the Minister-President position.
