Community governance - The CDU and SPD aim to thwart AfD's progress in upcoming run-off elections.
In Thuringia, the SPD and CDU have declared they'll back candidates to oppose AfD candidates in upcoming local elections. According to SPD Thuringia's state chair, Georg Maier, speaking to the "Rheinische Post," the Social Democrats won't shy away from their duty to stop "anti-democratic" AfD members. This strategy aided CDU district governor Christian Herrgott in defeating an AfD opponent during an early 2024 race. As for Maier's expectations, he insists the CDU must exhibit similar democratic behavior against SPD candidates in upcoming runoffs.
CDU state leader Mario Voigt acknowledged that in Thuringia, the AfD functions as the primary rival to the CDU. He explained, "To win the June runoffs and achieve victories, it takes collective efforts surpassing party boundaries. In cases where we don't feature in the runoffs, we'll champion the SPD and FDP."
Discussions regarding the Left Party's intentions are ongoing. They're debating if the Left Party would back more democratic candidates against Nazis. When questioned about this, Left Party's Bundesgeschäftsführerin Katina Schubert informed the newspaper that the Left typically wouldn't vote for the AfD.
