Religious institution - The Catholic Day begins with a Corpus Christi service.
A special Mass honoring Corpus Christi signals the start (10:00 AM) of Catholic Day in Erfurt on Thursday. Bishop Ulrich Neymeyr of Erfurt will preside over the Mass. While Corpus Christi isn't a national holiday in Thuringia for all, it is in the Eichsfeld region - a predominantly Catholic area within secular Thuringia. The Catholics celebrate this day by publicly expressing their belief in Christ's presence in the Eucharist during this festival.
In terms of discussions, the Faith Meeting on Thursday tackles controversial topics. Planned discussions and panels include, but are not limited to, reformation efforts within the Church, handling of sexualized abuse cases, and exploring the connection between antisemitism and the Church. Prominent guests include the Chairman of the German Bishops' Conference, Georg Baetzing, and the Director of the Memorial Sites at the former Nazi concentration camps Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora, Jens-Christian Wagner.
For the first time ever, Catholic Day is being held in Erfurt. It's estimated that up to 20,000 people will attend by the end of the weekend.
