Economy - The business climate unexpectedly worsens further at Ifo

The mood in the German economy was surprisingly worsened in July. The Ifo business climate dropped by 1.6 points to 87.0 points, as the Ifo Institute announced on Thursday in Munich. Analysts had expected a brightening of mood and had on average expected 89.0 points. This is the third consecutive decline of the most important German economic barometer. "The German economy is in crisis," commented Ifo President Clemens Fuest.

The roughly 9,000 surveyed companies assessed the prospects for their future business significantly worse. The assessment of the current situation also fell short of the previous month. In industry, the business climate has significantly declined. In trade, in the service sector, and in construction, the values decreased.

Germany's economic slump continued in Munich, as the business climate in various sectors, including industry, trade, and construction, showed further deterioration. Despite this, experts had anticipated an improvement in the overall German economy.

The ongoing struggles in the German economy have led Ifo President Clemens Fuest to note that the country is currently experiencing an economic crisis, with companies widely assessing their future business prospects less favorably.
