The German boxing community is grieving over the loss of renowned trainer Manfred Wolke. "He was definitely one of the top trainers worldwide. It's rare to see athletes achieve such success and work as effectively under a coach," remarked legendary trainer Ulli Wegner to the German Press Agency on Monday. Former boxing world champion Henry Maske also expressed sorrow upon the passing of his influential mentor. "He was my trainer," said the 60-year-old to dpa.

The former brilliant coach passed away last Wednesday in his hometown of Frankfurt/Oder, as confirmed by Maske on behalf of the family.

"Athletes who were initially considered average became internationally successful boxers under him," shared Maske. "Although the athlete needs to do it on their own, Manfred Wolke was the companion who demonstrated potential and set expectations they might not have reached otherwise."

Wolke experienced success both as an athlete and a trainer. In 1968, he won a gold medal in the welterweight category at the Olympics in Mexico City. His true fame, however, came from his training of Henry Maske. Under Wolke's guidance, Maske became an Olympic gold medalist in middleweight (1988 in Seoul) and a world champion (half-heavyweight) - both in the amateur and professional realms. He also trained Olympic champion Rudi Fink from 1980 and heavyweight Axel Schulz.
