- The blind man in Magdeburg is not disarmed until nightfall
The defusing of a World War II bomb in the heart of Magdeburg is delayed. The unexploded device is expected to be rendered safe only on Wednesday night, a police spokesperson said.
Originally, the defusing of the 250-kilogram American-made bomb was scheduled for Tuesday evening. Around 3,000 to 3,500 residents are affected and will now have to spend at least part of the night away from their homes.
Residents have been asked to leave the evacuation zone, the spokesperson said. Later in the evening, officers will go door-to-door to urge everyone to leave the area, supported by loudspeaker announcements.
The bomb was discovered during excavation work in the Straße Zum Domfelsen near the Elbe. According to the police, an area of 500 meters around the discovery site is being evacuated, including the central Hasselbachplatz.
Experts from the bomb disposal service have already inspected the bomb and can begin defusing it as soon as the evacuation measures are complete, the spokesperson said.
For those who cannot stay with friends or family, accommodation will be provided in cooperation with the city. A shuttle service may also be set up.
Due to the unexpected delay, residents should be prepared for an emergency evacuation on Wednesday night. The prolonged absence from their homes could necessitate emergency arrangements for food and shelter.
