The Berlin Night of the Bat invites you on an expedition

Berlin serves as a sanctuary for bats: Isolated within Spandau Citadel, approximately 10,000 of these animals engage in annual hibernation. Yet, you can also stumble upon these insect-devouring creatures in numerous other locations throughout the city.

As the evening draws near, Berlin residents have the opportunity to follow the path of bats during the weekend at various events. This special occasion is known as the International Bat Night (Bat Night), happening on August 24. Organized by Germany's Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU), the event features several activities.

Berlin's Bat Association invites you to two free bat walks on both Friday and Saturday, starting at 7:30 PM each day. The meeting spot for the first walk is the FEZ (Children and Youth Recreation Center) in Wuhlheide. For the second walk, join in at the 'Rübezahl' bus stop in Köpenicker Forest on Saturday. Attendees aged five and above can uncover fascinating facts about the nocturnal predator during these excursions. Keep in mind that registration is necessary.

Spreichpark's Bat Night also focuses on these tiny winged creatures. An afternoon walk demonstrates how bats can be detected by using a detector. These devices convert the inaudible ultrasonic sounds bats use for navigation into audible signals, as explained by Grün Berlin. Note that registration is required for this event as well. Alongside this, enjoy a stage program showcasing music, spoken word, and comedy, all offered for free and with sign language interpretation.

According to NABU, three out of the 25 bat species in Germany are currently in grave danger. Four more species are considered endangered, and another three species are at risk due to factors such as a decline in food sources, insect population, and habitat loss due to building renovations and the felling of old trees.

During the bat walks, children aged five and above can join and learn about bats, making it an educational and entertaining experience for the whole family. At Spreichpark's Bat Night, there's an afternoon walk specifically designed for children, providing them with an opportunity to explore the world of bats in an engaging way.
