- The bat has consumed its fill.
Bat Population in Saxony-Anhalt is flourishing this year. The damp summer has set up optimal circumstances, as per Bernd Ohlendorf, an expert from the German Nature Conservation Union. The abundance of critters this year is unprecedented compared to the past few decades. "The bats are bloated with food," Ohlendorf remarked. These optimal conditions are perfect for mating season.
Satuday marks the International Bat Night, an initiative aimed at educating people about these nocturnal creatures. During this period, there are events in Saxony-Anhalt, including one on August 30th at Heimkehle and Walbeck in the Mansfeld-South Harz district, and another on August 31st at the Biosphere Reserve Dromling.
The favorable conditions are notably evident on the vast clear-cut areas of former spruce forests in the Harz. The blossoming landscape serves as a buffet for insects, offering a feast for the bats, Ohlendorf explained. However, he expresses concerns about the growth of wind power, which could potentially endanger both insects and bats. Currently, Saxony-Anhalt houses 20 different species of bats.
Other species of bats might also benefit from the abundant food sources in the region. The increased bat population could attract other bat-dependent predators, such as owls and eagles.
