The Bäderbahn, a train line between Lübeck and Neustadt in the Ostholstein district, won't be shut down. The decision to cease operations in 2021 has been reversed by German Railways. The initial plan was to shutter the line as part of a new railway construction project for the proposed Fehmarnbelt crossing.

The primary opposition to the shutdown came from the town of Timmendorfer Strand, as it would have incidentally lost a significant transport link.

In response, Schleswig-Holstein's Transport State Secretary, Tobias von der Heide, expressed his satisfaction with the railway's decision, saying it brought clarity. The state will continue to have the option to order passenger rail services on the new line.

According to the railway spokesperson, a company has applied for the "Bäderbahn." The rail service will continue on the current line until the launch of the new connection in 2029. From the end of 2029, trains for local, long-distance, and freight transport will travel exclusively on the new route from Lübeck to Puttgarden.
