Berlin's car registration numbers have taken a dip despite the city's expanding population. As of 2023, with a population of approximately 3.878 million, the count stood at approximately 1.078,000 passenger vehicles, as per the Senate's response to a Green Party query. The figure dipped slightly in 2022, reaching 1.087,000 cars, while 2021 saw nearly 1.099,000 cars registered. The ratio of cars to inhabitants was 291:1000 in 2021, which slipped to 282:1000 in 2022 and further to 278:1000 in 2023.

Approximately 17,600 electric vehicles, 50,700 hybrid cars, and 13,499 plug-in hybrid vehicles are currently under Berlin's automotive registry. The number of motorhomes has seen a significant surge over the past decade, climbing from 9,200 in 2015 to 19,029 this year.

Despite the decrease in traditional car registrations, Berlin has seen an increase in alternative transportation methods. The city's transport and telecommunications sectors are actively promoting and improving infrastructure for electric vehicles, hybrid cars, and plug-in hybrid vehicles.
