The Rostock District Court has cleared five environmental activists, charged with attempted extortion and resisting law enforcement officers, of all allegations. This decision was announced following a prolonged trial by a court representative.

These activists, comprising three males and two females, aged between 19 and 42, are associated with the group "Last Generation". On August 31 the previous year, they temporarily impeded traffic on August-Bebel-Straße in Rostock at a junction by sticking themselves to the road surface using superglue - sometimes their hands, other times their feet.

The 42-year-old defendant asserted that, in light of the looming climate disaster, the passive government's inactivity, and society's widespread disinterest, non-violent and symbolic actions were indispensable to broadcast the "apocalyptic danger" to the masses. A police officer present during the operation testified that the protest remained peaceful.

This particular instance of coercion was deemed unproven by the court, considering the brief duration of the obstruction. From the moment the activists stepped onto the roadway until the road was reopened, just 19 minutes had elapsed. This caused a traffic congestion stretching approximately 270 meters. The court held that, in the judge's opinion, the action did not go beyond the "tolerance threshold."

The authorities were alerted about the demonstration earlier and had arrived at the scene within two minutes. The officers employed cooking oil to free the activists from their attached positions on the roadway. Due to their firm adherence, an emergency vehicle could have passed if necessary. A handful of individuals, around ten, expressed support for the activists outside the courthouse. The verdict is not yet final.

The activists were charged in front of the [The Court of First Instance] due to their actions on August-Bebel-Straße. Despite being affiliated with "Last Generation" and temporarily obstructing traffic, they were cleared of all allegations related to attempted extortion and resisting law enforcement.
