Germany's Interior Minister for Nordrhein-Westphalia, Herbert Reul (CDU), is advocating for strengthened border checks at the country's external borders and the expulsion of refugees in response to the lethal stabbing incident in Solingen. In an interview with Deutschlandfunk, Reul stated, "I think there's no other way around it." Limiting immigration, according to him, is the most crucial action, and he supports expelling refugees to Afghanistan and Syria.
Over the weekend, three individuals were slain, and eight more were injured, four severely, during a city celebration in Solingen. The alleged perpetrator is a 26-year-old Syrian national. The Federal Prosecutor's Office is probing him for murder and suspected membership in the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS).
Reul cited a decline in public trust in refugee policy as a cause for this political disconnect. He attributed this to prolonged neglect of related issues. Regarding potential shortcomings in the deportation process of the Solingen suspect, Reul denounced any claim of political accountability. Instead, he pointed to the North Rhine-Westphalia Ministry for Children, Youth, Family, Equality, Refugees and Integration and Minister Josefine Paul (Greens). "Minister Paul is currently addressing some unresolved questions," Reul noted.
Reul called for a bipartisan initiative and a roundtable discussion. Former Federal President Gauck expressed this attitude a few months ago: "We can't take everyone in and we're overburdening ourselves and our society." The idea that immigration must be controlled is now universally accepted.
In light of the lethal stabbing incident in Solingen, Germany's Interior Minister for Nordrhein-Westphalia, Herbert Reul, suggested strengthening border checks and expelling refugees from Germany, specifically to Afghanistan and Syria. Following this incident, Reul criticized the North Rhine-Westphalia Ministry for Children, Youth, Family, Equality, Refugees and Integration and Minister Josefine Paul (Greens) for not resolving certain deportation issues.
