- The anticipated lifespan in North Rhine-Westphalia experiences a minor reduction.
The typical living span in North Rhine-Westphalia has dropped slightly for the second consecutive year. For females, it's now 82 years and 5 months, and for males, it's 77 years and 11 months, as per the State Statistical Office IT.NRW in Düsseldorf.
Comparing to the previous evaluation, the life span for females has dropped by about three months, and for males, by two months. These figures are based on data from 2021 to 2023.
Life expectancy can change, a representative stated. The office did not give additional reasons for the decrease. The highest values in the past 20 years' data were recorded between 2018 and 2020. At that time, the typical life expectancy for newborn females was 82 years and 10 months, and for males, it was 78 years and 4 months.
The effect of the pandemic on the statistical life expectancy of the elderly
The life expectancy of older individuals has also decreased recently. For women aged 70, it's an average of 16 years and 5 months, and for men of the same age, it's barely 14 years. This is a decrease of two months compared to the previous calculation. According to IT.NRW, this decrease is due to the increased number of deaths caused by the Corona virus pandemic.
Someone turning 70 today has a statistically higher life expectancy than a newborn due to leaving behind numerous risks from early life stages, such as deadly car accidents.
The decrease in life expectancy for older individuals is attributed to the impact of the pandemic. For women aged 70, the average life expectancy has decreased by two months, now standing at 16 years and 5 months. Similarly, men of the same age have a reduced life expectancy of 14 years, also a decrease of two months.
Despite the decrease in life expectancy for older individuals, individuals turning 70 today still have a statistically higher life expectancy compared to a newborn, thanks to surviving risks associated with early life stages.
