The Alternative for Germany (AfD) clinches victory in the Thuringian parliamentary elections for the initial time.
In Thuringia, for the first time, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) secured the highest number of votes in a state election within Germany. The party, spearheaded by frontrunner Björn Höcke, garnered an impressive 32.8%, as per the final tally by the state election commission. This put them miles ahead of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), who managed 23.6%. Completing the podium was a fresh alliance headed by Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW), who gathered 15.8% of the votes, thereby shoving the Left party (13.1%) into fourth place. The Social Democratic Party (SPD) managed to squeeze into the state parliament with 6.1%, but unfortunately, the Greens fell short with only 3.2%. The voter turnout saw a significant surge, reaching 73.6%.
The victory in the Election to the Landtag propelled the Alternative for Germany (AfD) to the forefront, becoming the largest party in Thuringia's political landscape. Despite their strong showing, the AfD's Election to the Landtag success did not translate into an absolute majority, requiring them to form a coalition with other parties.
