The Alternative for Germany (AfD) stumbled once more in their bid for a vice-president position in the Saxony-Anhalt state parliament. AfD representative Christian Mertens came up short in the Friday ballot, being the sole contender. In a confidential vote, Mertens received 19 affirmative votes. A vast majority of 71 parliamentarians voted against him, while 2 abstained. Mertens isn't alone in his endeavor to earn the support of other parliamentary factions for the vice-presidency position within the AfD, as all previous candidates have similarly fallen short. In Saxony-Anhalt, the AfD is recognized by the domestic intelligence agency as an unquestionably far-right extremist party.
