Local Governments Restructured - The AfD (Alternative for Germany) party is leading in the district elections in Sonneberg.
In the recent district council election in Sonneberg, Thuringia, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party emerged as the victor with a 36.6% share of the votes cast on Sunday night. The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) plummeted into second place with a 22.1% share. Previously, the CDU held the majority of seats in the Sonneberg Municipal Parliament, which is home to roughly 57,000 residents. This was an unexpected blow for the party, as it was widely represented and had held this position since at least June, when Robert Sesselmann was elected as the AfD's first district administrator in Germany there.
