Creative expression through various mediums - The Academy of Arts advocates for increased openness in discussions during crises.
The new chief of the Berlin Academy of Arts plans to tackle the escalating disputes happening in Germany and their widespread implications through transparent dialogue. Manos Tsangaris, the newly appointed Academy president, said on Monday in Berlin, "The public debate is being whittled down to the use of slogans and certain viewpoints that cause reflexive responses." His newly elected deputy, Anh-Linh Ngo, believes the heated discussions at the Academy can serve as a blueprint. "If we lead these debates on democratic ideals, transparently, openly, attentively, and empathetically, we can achieve a great deal."
Tsangaris, a composer, musician, and installation artist, and Ngo, an architecture publisher, were elected to the Academy's top positions for three years this past weekend. They replaced the departing president Jeannine Meerapfel, a filmmaker, and vice president Kathrin Röggla, a writer. With current membership of 407 artists and individuals across all disciplines, the Academy is one of Europe's oldest cultural institutions.
Regarding his background, Tsangaris said, "We are not politicians; we are artists with a diverse range of experiences." Thus, it's not about taking a firm stance at first, but about creating spaces for dialogue and exchange. "The Academy, which is genuinely concerned with the intricacies of communication, is the ideal place to distinguish these views."
Tsangaris also pointed to the international composition of the Academy's members. These valuable contacts can be leveraged, he suggested, in conversations about perspectives on Germany from abroad.

The Berlin Academy of the Arts, led by Tsangaris and Ngo, aims to utilize conflicts in Germany as an opportunity for transparent discussions. Tsangaris criticized the narrowing of public discourse, suggesting that the Academy could serve as a model for open and empathetic debates. The new leaders believe that promoting transparency and dialogue within the Academy can contribute to resolving significant issues. Despite their non-political backgrounds, they plan to leverage the international composition of Academy members to gain perspectives on Germany from abroad.
