Fires - Thatched museum building burnt down

At a major fire in the Landscape Museum Angeln in Unewatt, the almost 400-year-old Marxenhouse was completely destroyed, and the main building of the museum was reduced to its foundation walls. The fire in the community of Langballig in the Schleswig-Flensburg district broke out on Saturday night around 1:00 am of unknown cause, according to the fire department. The police are now investigating the cause of the fire. In the past few days, there have been multiple fires in the area - first straw bales, then garbage containers were on fire.

The historic Marxenhouse from 1626 depicted the lives and housing conditions of the old farms. "It's tragic that this valuable cultural heritage has now fallen victim to the flames," said Mark Rücker, district fire chief, to the news portal "Foerde.News". The burning building had already collapsed completely shortly thereafter.

Shortly thereafter, the similarly thatched-roofed main house of the museum village also caught fire. "Through the fire, the wind, and the sparks, the thatched roof of a neighboring building was also ignited," said Rücker. Firefighters had tried to rescue as many objects as possible from the approximately 200-year-old building. "During the operation, the fire department entered the building and rescued art and cultural objects and documents. This had to be abandoned, however, because it had become too dangerous," said Jan Strohmer from the district fire brigade association to NDR.

The timber frame of the main building of the museum was reportedly completely burnt out, but the fire department was able to secure parts of the foundation walls. During the firefighting efforts with around 200 firefighters, three firefighters were injured. "Three of our firefighters had to be taken to the hospital due to circulatory collapse," said Rücker.

The Fire department in Schleswig-Flensburg is currently investigating the cause of the large fire that destroyed the Marxenhouse and significantly damaged the main building of the Landscape Museum Angeln in Unewatt. Despite the efforts of firefighters, equipped with their fishing rods to retrieve valuable artifacts, the historic main building suffered extensive damage, with only parts of the foundation walls remaining. In the aftermath of the incident, the Schleswig-Holstein Police have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the Fires.
