Handball Bundesliga - Thanks to Claar: Magdeburg still top of the table
SC Magdeburg reclaimed top spot in the German Handball League on Sunday with a hard-earned 32:30 (18:16) home win in the traditional duel with VfL Gummersbach. The best Magdeburg scorer in front of 6600 spectators in the sold-out Getec Arena was Felix Claar with ten goals. The SCM is ten goals ahead of the Füchse Berlin, who are level on points.
In an evenly poised opening spell, the visitors had a slight advantage until SCM went on a 4:0 run to pull three goals ahead within three minutes (7:4/10th minute). Even a timeout by the visitors (10') did not stop Magdeburg's flow at first, even though Gummersbach was able to reduce the deficit again in the course of the first half. Magdeburg had problems getting a grip defensively, but still led narrowly at the break.
The home side did not come out of the break well and initially had to concede a quick equalizer (18:18/32) and ultimately trailed by three goals (20:23/40). However, a timeout and an intermediate spurt by the SCM equalized, as the visitors punished their mistakes. Magdeburg won in the end because Bennet Wiegert's team made fewer mistakes.
