Tesla has to recall two million cars
The name "Autopilot" for the driver assistance system in Tesla vehicles has long been criticized. The accusation is that it suggests deceptive safety. After years of investigation, the US auto safety authority is going one step further and demanding the recall of two million vehicles.
Tesla must update the software for the "Autopilot" assistance system in around two million cars in the USA due to safety defects. The US auto safety authority, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), had found in a year-long investigation that the car manufacturer's driver assistance system is not good enough to prevent misuse. "Automated technology holds great promise for improving safety, but only if it is used responsibly," the agency stated.
Various vehicles of the S, X, 3 and Y models are affected. Without an update, there is a risk of accidents if the autopilot is active but the driver does not have a constant view of the traffic and therefore does not recognize dangerous situations in time.
If the Tesla Autopilot is active, the vehicles regulate their speed independently as long as they remain in the same lane; with an extended Autopilot function, they can also change lanes. This is not a function that enables autonomous driving, but a driver assistance system - even if the name suggests otherwise.
The NHTSA investigation continues as the agency reviews the effectiveness of Tesla's fix. As Tesla noted in the recall report, the software update will be installed online starting December 12 or shortly thereafter. The recall is already the second this year. Tesla is coming under increasing criticism after hundreds of accidents. There have also been fatalities in some of these accidents.

Tesla is expanding its recall of two million cars in the USA, as the NHTSA found traffic accident risks associated with the "Autopilot" system when drivers fail to maintain attention to traffic. The safety defect led to the second recall this year for Tesla Motors.
