Tesla considers building new entry-level model in Grünheide
According to an insider, the US electric car pioneer Tesla is planning to produce a new entry-level model for its German factory. The car is to cost 25,000 euros, a person familiar with the matter told the Reuters news agency. Tesla CEO Elon Musk visited the factory last Friday and informed the company of the plans on this occasion. Tesla's best-selling Model Y has so far rolled off the production line there. A doubling of capacity to one million cars per year has already been applied for. Tesla did not want to comment on this.
The electric car manufacturer has been aiming for a low-cost model for a long time, but put its plans on hold last year due to unsolvable technical issues. In September, Reuters reported that Tesla was on the verge of pressing the entire underbody of the vehicle in one piece - a breakthrough that could reduce costs and speed up production.
A model suitable for mass production would be an important step for the car manufacturer, which aims to eclipse the traditional volume manufacturers Volkswagen, Toyota and General Motors with annual sales of 20 million cars by 2030.
More pay since November
Musk also used his visit to thank the employees for their commitment. They are to receive a four percent pay rise from November, Tesla announced. In December, an inflation adjustment of 1,500 euros will be added, and from February the annual wages of around 11,000 employees will be increased by an additional 2,500 euros.
The IG Metall trade union had complained in the past that wages at the US electric car manufacturer were around 20 percent below the industry collective agreement and canvassed for members outside the factory gates last month. "Claims that there is a link between Tesla's salary adjustments and union activity are untrue," Tesla explained. The wage increases were the result of a standard internal process. The management had negotiated them with the works council of the Gigafactory in Grünheide.
Tesla Motors' new entry-level model, intended for mass production, could significantly contribute to the company's goal of surpassing traditional volume manufacturers like Volkswagen, Toyota, and General Motors in annual sales, reaching 20 million cars by 2030. Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla Motors, recently visited the Grünheide factory to discuss the plans for this affordable electric car.
Tesla's dedication to electromobility extends beyond their high-end vehicles, as demonstrated by their efforts to produce a more affordable electric car. Elon Musk, the visionary behind Tesla Motors, has been instrumental in driving this mission, and his latest visit to the Grünheide factory underscores the company's commitment to this goal.
