Bundesliga - Terzic defends himself and feels increased pressure
Edin Terzic has experienced more pleasant times at Borussia Dortmund. The pressure on the coach of the struggling Bundesliga club is increasing, even according to his perception. In addition, Terzic is plagued by serious personnel problems ahead of the next tricky task on Saturday (18:30/Sky) against RB Leipzig. Left-back Julian Ryerson and attacker Youssoufa Moukoko will not be able to play for the Westphalians this year. Both were injured on Wednesday in the 2-0 cup defeat at VfB Stuttgart.
As a result, two players who were sidelined at BVB just a few weeks ago will now get a chance: U17 World Cup winner Paris Brunner should be in the squad against Leipzig and could make his professional debut. In addition, Thomas Meunier, who has already been sidelined, will get a new chance. "He's done exceptionally well in training recently," Terzic said of the Belgian, who seemed to have run out of options after the signings of Ryerson and Ramy Bensebaini, who has been a colossal disappointment so far. Now he's getting them after all. "It's all about him making the most of it now," said Terzic. "We now have a situation where many players have left us within days."
Youngster Brunner was suspended a few weeks ago for an unspecified incident, but has since been reprieved and should be full of confidence after winning the World Cup in Indonesia.
The entire team is expected to regain this confidence through success. "We have the clear task of doing better as quickly as possible," said Terzic on the task against Leipzig. The performances in the 1:1 draw in Leverkusen and in the DFB Cup were sobering. "We urgently need to get our consistency back," demanded the BVB coach, but offered little hope himself. "There will always be these setbacks. It's always made into an issue," grumbled the 41-year-old. "There are pressure situations for every Bundesliga coach in a season. Of course I'm feeling that now too," admitted Terzic.
The coach has also been criticized recently for his supposed defensive tactics. However, Terzic defended himself against this on Friday and justified himself: "Against Munich, for example, we also conceded an extremely large number of chances." After the experience of the 4-0 defeat to Bayern just over a month ago, he therefore only chose a more defensive approach against the league leaders, who were also strong in attack. However, this is by no means the general new approach: "That's not the DNA of our team either."
