Tensions re-erupt in New Caledonia: Multiple structures immerse in flames

Multiple groups took action, with assaults on law enforcement and arson incidents reported. Moreover, roadblocks were erected, as per reports.

In the capital Nouméa, as per the High Commissioner, various buildings and vehicles, including police stations and emergency services, were allegedly torched. The fires were said to have been contained.

On top of that, in other cities, vandalism, arson, and confrontations between police and independence advocates were recorded, as the High Commissioner further disclosed. Numerous schools kept their doors closed on Monday morning.

The violent demonstrations in New Caledonia were ignited by a scheduled electoral adjustment in mid-May, which the native inhabitants of the South Pacific archipelago feared would disadvantage them. A total of nine lives were lost in the chaos, damages were estimated to be approximately 1.5 billion Euros. Following the announcement of fresh elections in France, the changes were temporarily suspended.

The situation has since subsided. The airport in Nouméa, which was previously closed, resumed flights about a week ago. Seven independence protesters, who were detained, were transported to the European mainland for their imprisonment.
