Tense situation at the Bavarian food banks

Society - Tense situation at the Bavarian food banks

More and more customers and fewer donations - the situation of the food banks in Bavaria is tense at the turn of the year. It is clear that in uncertain times, individuals and companies keep their money together and donate less, said Peter Zilles, Chairman of the Bavarian Food Bank Association based in Bayreuth. "I say that completely without reproach."

There has also been a decline in food donations. Retailers are keeping their goods on the shelves for as long as possible, especially before the holidays. This is legitimate, emphasized Zilles. Chocolate Santa Clauses and other Christmas products would then arrive at the food banks from mid-January.

Zilles has observed that the mood among both customers and food bank employees is poor at the moment. Wars and economic worries are increasing the uncertainty. "There is bad news almost every day. I would like to see a silver lining on the horizon." Peace is the most important thing, because the negative effects of wars can be seen everywhere.

Whether there are enough helpers for the 175 food banks in Bavaria varies from place to place. There are currently around 11,300 people across the state who are involved in the food banks. They do a lot, emphasized Zilles - "and that with constantly increasing challenges". The number of new customers continues to rise. Although the workload is high, the work is also meaningful: the food banks have a very sensible concept. Goods that are already available and are no longer being sold are passed on to people.

The food banks collect food that can no longer be sold - such as overproduction, food with a best-before date that is about to expire or excess stock. The food is given to people who are dependent on state support.
